FIRST® LEGO® League guides youth through STEM learning and exploration at an early age.
From Discover, to Explore and then to Challenge, participants gain real-world problem-solving experiences through a guided, global robotics program using LEGO technology, helping today’s students, families, and educators build a better future together.
FIRST® LEGO® League is the result of an exciting alliance between FIRST and the LEGO® Group.
Program Details and Cost
See your students grow and shine through FIRST® LEGO® League. Starting with Discover, children ages 4-6 are introduced to the fundamentals of STEM while working together to solve fun challenges and building models using LEGO bricks. As participants progress into Explore (ages 6-10), children will take their background knowledge of STEM and put it into practice as they work in teams to design and build robots using LEGO Education SPIKETM Essential. Once they are ready to move into a competitive setting, they join Challenge and apply their STEM skills combined with critical thinking to work with a team, build a robot and compete in an exciting, mission-based Robot Game.

Each Challenge season has three parts: the Robot Game, the Innovation Project, and the FIRST® Core Values. Teams may recruit 2 to 10 interested team members ages 9 to 14 or in the 4-8 grade. A coach is allowed to coach multiple teams. Each team must have at least 2 adult coaches. Once you have a team (you do not need all team member names yet), you may register. Challenge is available as an individual team or Class Pack.

Required National Registration of: $250.00
Texas Event Registration of: $225.00

- Resources include the Team Meeting guide, Robot Game Rulebook, static and interactive version of the Engineering Notebook, and a library of other tools and resources you can use throughout the year.
- Real-world, real-time support and resource sharing through our new Professional Learning Community
- Eligibility to participate in the FIRST LEGO League Global Innovation Award
- Ability to compete in remote or in-person FIRST LEGO League Challenge events in Texas.
- Access to the FIRST storefront to purchase the Challenge Set and discounted LEGO Robot Sets
- Access to team roster to register team members including mentors and participants
Team Registration fee does not include shipping and handling, the Challenge Set, nor guarantees that remote or in-person events are available in your Area. Additional costs for event participation, travel, food, team shirts and other optional items will vary.
Additional cost considerations:
- New FIRST LEGO League Challenge teams can expect to pay approximately $900 for team registration, the Challenge Set, and a reusable robot kit of parts.
- Veteran teams will pay less since the robot set can be used year after year. Team registration and the Challenge Set must be purchased every season, approximately $625.
- FIRST in Texas is responsible for delivering FIRST LEGO League Challenge events which may include physical, remote, or a combination of physical and remote elements.
Each year in August, FIRST® LEGO® League Explore releases a new Challenge for teams that focuses on a scientific topic. Teams are sent on a journey of discovery to learn all they can about the topic, then present their findings in the form of a team poster and a LEGO model that moves. You may recruit 2 to 6 interested team members ages 6 to 10 or in the 2-4 grade. A coach is allowed to coach multiple teams. Each team must have at least 2 adult coaches. Once you have a team (you do not need all team member names yet), you may register. Explore is available as an individual team or Class Pack.

Texas Event Registration of: $65.00

- Explore Set, used by the team to complete their challenge for the season

- Ability to register for remote and in-person FIRST LEGO League Explore Festival Events (varies by region)
- Access to the FIRST storefront to purchase discounted LEGO Robot Sets
- Access to team roster to register team members including mentors and participants.

- FIRST in Texas is responsible for delivering of FIRST LEGO League Explore Festival events which may include physical, remote, or a combination of physical and remote elements.
For children ages 4-6, Discover is a playful introductory STEM program ignites their natural curiosity and builds their habits of learning with hands-on activities in the classroom and at home using LEGO® DUPLO® bricks.
A new and exciting Challenge is presented every year, and each team of four children begins their exploration of a real-world theme with an exclusive LEGO Education Discovery Set. With this set as a starting point, they build a solution to the Challenge with LEGO® DUPLO® elements.
